G6 ESL 2-4 November, 2016

WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEK IN ESL THIS WEEK?

GENERAL

Welcome back to school! I trust you all had a wonderful holiday and are rested, relaxed and ready for the term ahead. We will begin our second quarter unit on Cause & Effect this week.

The overarching questions for this topic are:

  • How can an event cause a ripple effect?
  • What came first; the chicken or the egg?
  • How do you know?

These questions will be studied in all core subjects over the term.

EAP

In EAP we will check that all students have a just right book for Novel Study and practice vocabulary skills. Students will learn about prefixes, base words and suffixes. They will also review types of sentences and verb tenses that they started before the break, and continue to practice summarising and paraphrasing. These skills will be applied to both English and SS lessons.

http://howtospell-letterpatterns.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/skitched-14-6-1-1.png

Reading skills will continue to be practiced through a shared reading of The Iron Man.

Homework:

  • Continue reading your novel if you have not finished.
  • Try and do 2-3 vocab cards per week for your Novel Study.

ENGLISH

Students will undertake  A Novel Idea in English classes, which is the title for an in- depth study of a fictional book. Students have already selected a novel to read and have hopefully read it over the break. This week they will be summarizing chunks and reviewing vocabulary in the book. Students will learn about the history (etymology) of certain words and their meaning (morphology).

SOCIAL STUDIES

The new Cause & Effect unit will start by looking at just what cause and effect means. The performance task for SS is a research one where students select a conflict in the world. Students will also choose how they present the info they learn about the cause and effect of this conflict. Teachers will model this task by reviewing the causes and effects of WW1.

Each student will write their own paragraph on the government and economic system in their society. As a group students will create a visual showing the government hierarchy, and list the rights and responsibilities of citizens on a poster board.

Make sure you keep to the schedule and that all group members participate and collaborate so you all do the best job you can possibly do. Read the Performance Task Handout and Rubric carefully and use them to guide and help you know what is expected.
