What is happening in G6 ESL?

GENERAL

It is the last full week of May and we have three weeks of school to go.

EAP

In EAP students will work on:

  • Reading comprehension.
  • Learn about prepositions.
  • Practice speaking for the English book presentations.
  • Prepare for the final EAP assessment- an oral interview.

 ENGLISH 

Students will polish their scripts on a Genre Wheel book, practicing their persuasive speeches. Presentations will take place on Thursday and Friday

This week students will continue to integrate SS, Science and Math. They will gather data, review the problems facing their biome and suggest solutions.

What is happening in G6 ESL?

GENERAL

We are back to our regular 2 classes for each block this week.

EAP

In EAP sessions students will work on:

  • Reading comprehension tasks
  • Review vocabulary and concepts in SS & Science
  • Take a vocab and sentence structure quiz
  • Practice speaking skills in preparation for the upcoming speeches in English.

Vocab cards are also in the Q4 Science and SS resources in the ESL Resources folder.

You should know all the science terms and the materials economy terms which include: extraction, production, distribution, consumption, disposal and sustainability.

This week students will integrate SS & Science. They will look at how the materials economy affects the biome they chose to research.

SCIENCE

Students will review the vocab and concepts related to the ecosystem, food chain and food webs in preparation for a Quiz coming up at the end of the week.

G6 ESL, 9-13 May

What is happening in G6 ESL?

GENERAL

It is the last 4-day week before the end of school. WIDA testing is complete. Tests are now moderated, (that means they are checked by other teachers), and results will be available at the end of May.

Mr Ken will still be absent this week due to his broken arm. We wish him a speedy recovery.

EAP

There is one class for A block and two classes for H block this week.

In EAP sessions students will work on:

  • Reading comprehension tasks
  • Review vocabulary and concepts for the upcoming Material’s Economy quiz in SS
  • Review Science vocab on ecosystems
  • Practice speaking skills in preparation for the impending speeches in English.

ENGLISH 

Students will continue their persuasive presentations for a Genre Wheel book.

Keep reading for your GW challenge as well – and submit those summaries! Again, it has been wonderful to see many students making the most of the long weekends and reading!

SOCIAL STUDIES 

This week students will review the Material’s Economy. They need to be able to:

  1. Identify the stages
  2. Define the terms
  3. Describe or give examples

Students have all started researching a particular biome. This will continue and should be completed by the end of the week. This work is integrated with Math, English and Social Studies and will form the basis of a Ted Talk in the last week of school.

G6 EAP 2- 6 May, 2016

What is happening in G6 ESL?

GENERAL

It’s May already and it’s another short 4-day week. This should be the last week of WIDA tests for EAP students. Remember to have a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and keep calm and positive.

Mr Ken will not be here this week as he broke his arm and is in hospital.

EAP

The Listening Part 2 WIDA test will take place on Tuesday for EAP A.

The Listening & Reading Part 2 WIDAs will take place on Thursday and Friday for EAP H.

Students will have one more lesson to proofread and revise their mini persuasive essay on their Genre Wheel book. This is due Tues for Block A students. It is due Friday for Block H students. There will be no retakes for this assessment as you have had a lot of class time to polish these.

This week an in-depth study of the Distribution, Consumption and Disposal components of the Material’s Economy will take place. There is some new vocab for this unit, so make sure you check the vocab lists in the ESL Resources folder.

Students will again continue learning vocabulary and concepts related to Ecosystems. Web quests (see the email sent by Mrs. Vergel with all the links) should be finished. There will be a bingo game and Kahoot to check your vocabulary!

What is happening in G6 ESL?

GENERAL

It’s a short week this week. I do not see H block at all as we have Activity Day of Thursday and Friday is a holiday.

A block will continue with WIDA testing Remember to have a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and keep calm and positive.

EAP

The Reading Part 2 WIDA test will take place on Monday as well as individual student speaking tests throughout the week. Ms Guiry and Ms O’Regan will conduct these.

Students will continue with their a mini persuasive essay on one of their Genre Wheel books. This is due Tues for Block A students.

Last week students viewed the video “The Story of Stuff.” This week the focus is on the Production component of the Material’s Economy. There is will also be an interactive game called the Trading Game to learn how supply and demand works.

Students will continue learning vocabulary and concepts related to Ecosystems. They will be doing web quests in class (see the email sent by Mrs. Vergel with all the links) and a bingo game to practice vocabulary.

 What is happening in G6 ESL?

GENERAL

This week WIDA testing starts for EAP students and will continue over the next month. It is very important all students have a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and keep calm and positive.

G6 students will also start their final fourth quarter unit on Relationships. This is an interdisciplinary unit. That means the topic will be studied in Math, Science, English & Social Studies. The big understandings include:

  • Relationships have different levels of complexity. 
  • Relationships impact other relationships.
  • Relationships fluctuate between states of balance and imbalance.

SOCIAL STUDIES 

Students will present their advertisements for their Future Forecast product at the FF Convention on Wed 20th April.

The Social Studies focus of the relationships unit will be to explore the economic and the global impact of consumer choices- our relationship with the rest of the world, and think about sustainability. There are a lot of new words to learn for EAP students!

We will begin the unit by viewing and discussing a video called “The Story of Stuff” as an introduction to the unit and the Materials Economy. It will be helpful to preview and review this video to make sure you understand the vocabulary.

Students will begin learning about a new topic on Ecosystems.

 What is happening in G6 ESL?

We have had two new students join us this semester and this week we will have three more students join our EAP class. I am sure everyone will make our newcomers feel welcome, and help them find their way around school and settle in.

EAP

Students will undertake a mini persuasive essay about one of their Genre Wheel books.The focus of this essay is to fine tune grammar and convention skills, (especially verb tenses and verb agreements), structure ideas clearly and to use persuasive language. These skills will support your Genre Wheel conference and the persuasive language you are studying in English for your product advertisement.

ENGLISH 

Genre Wheel conferences will take place this week for many EAP students. Check your class schedule and be prepared.

You should also continue your genre wheel reading. This will finish at the end of April.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students will work on their advertisements for their Future Forecast product. The FF Convention is on Wed 20th April. There is also a SS assessment this week. It will include 4 paragraphs about the FF problem, background, solution and positive and negatives of your product. This will be on Fri 15th April.

Students will complete their electrifying electrical circuit investigation and reflect on their learning.

G6 ESL 4-8 April, 2016

What is happening in G6 ESL?

Welcome back to school and the final quarter of your grade 6 year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends and you are ready for the bustling and busy term ahead.

The next two weeks will be spent completing projects you started before the holiday- Future Forecast in Eng & SS, and the Electrical Circuit Investigation in Science. Following that will be an interdisciplinary project for the Relationships Unit. This will include work from Math, Science English and SS. There will be more info about that later. For now, enjoy being back at school and the week ahead.

EAP

Students will continue their reading comprehension assessment, continue practicing reading skills and put into practice all the grammar skills they have been learning by writing fluent and correct paragraphs, with a special focus on verb agreements.

Students will use the EmPOWER method to write an introduction and conclusion for their product advertisement.

Students are still expected to continue reading and completing their summary surveys for the Genre Wheel. This will continue to the end of May. The second part of the GW Challenge will begin with an individual conference on a book. The teachers modeled what this conference would look and sound like before the break.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Creating a product for the Future Forecast project will begin after evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of your plan. Remember Presentations for the project are scheduled for 20th April.

WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEK?

GENERAL

It is June, and it is our final week of sixth grade for the year 2014-15. Let’s make it a good one! There are only 3 ½ days of school to go…

We have regular classes on Monday and Tuesday.

There is no homework.

 Please make sure you have returned all your library and textbooks.

Also, start clearing those lockers out now! Bring a plastic bag or extra bag to carry belongings home.

On Wednesday there is a special program.

  • You go to your regular E  & F block class.
  • You will go to your HB for Advisory. Time to clear out your lockers.
  • 15- 2pm 6thgrade movie time in designated classrooms
  • 2pm- 2.45 Year Book signing in Covered Court.

Thursday is a half-day and the final day for students. There is a shortened schedule.
